Change 12 - Organize Photos

I have decided to organize my photos.

Like most people who live in the age of the digital camera, I have hundreds of photographs that need to be organized, archived, and printed.  I have photos on three different computers, several CD-Roms, and various media cards.  I’ll begin by copying all photos to an external hard drive.  Over the next few weeks, I’ll sort through the photos, label them, and print out the ones that catch my eye.  I’ll also copy several of the photos to an online photo storage account.

  2. Good luck in this endeavor. It has taken me a loooooong time and I’m still in process. Seems the “wouldn’t-it-be-nice” projects (slide shows, scrapbooks - actual and digital, sharing with cousins, adding photos to geneology databases, etc.) accumulate as one goes through the photos. It’s going to be a life-long project even if I never added another photo.

  3. The most important thing on a computer in my opinion is your pictures. So many people have 1 copy at 1 place. That file can get corrupted and you lose that forever.

It is great to be able to go back and find things easily. I like to sort by year then event. I don’t take enough to justify going down to month, but if I did I would try to do that too.

Backup pictures is one of the first things I tell people when they ask about doing anything to their computer.
