Change 3 - Keep Kitchen Counter Clutter Free

I have decided to remove the clutter from my kitchen counter and to keep the counter clutter free.

If you were to walk in our house - right now - you’d see what an amazing job my wife does of keeping things nice-and-neat.  But, if you walked into our kitchen, you’d see ‘my counter’.  This is the counter upon which I keep all of ‘my stuff’.  You would see my headphones, a few bills, some papers from work, a couple of golf tees, and a some magazines.  My wife hates the clutter on ‘my counter’.  But, for years, I have stubbornly refused to do anything about ‘my counter’.

No more.  From now own, as part of the 99 Changes Project, and as a way to show my wife that I can grow up (just a bit), I will maintain a clutter free counter top!

  4. I wish you luck on this one. This is an area that I work on occasionally - with mixed success.

I believe that the key to real success on this one is getting everyone in the household to buy into helping to keep it clean. Therein lies my problem.

I find that it just isn’t as important enough to others in my household as it is to me, so clutter tends to crawl up there and gather at night when we’re sleeping, it seems.

  6. You could just take a picture of my kitchen counter and use that as your “before” picture. I have the exact same thing going on.

  7. Same problem here. Although if I clean up the counter clutter… it just seems to move over to the desk!

  8. My clutter catcher is my dining table. I am going to try to join you on your 99 changes…the water thing I already have down. I used to walk 30 minutes a day every day because of a carpool, but have recently changed back to public transit. Will have to figure another way to walk every day. The weather here in the Washington, DC area doesn’t lend itself to walking outdoors at this time of year…gotta think on this one.

  9. My desk looks like your counter. I am getting better. I can at least see the top of the desk and have some space to write. I still have a pile of papers here that needs to be gone through, but over time, this will also be dealt with.

You should read some of the articles written by people who are minimalists and specialize in “decluttering” Unbelievable!
