Change 1 - Giving Up Sodas

I have decided to stop drinking sodas.  I will no longer purchase sodas.  I will no longer drink sodas.

Sodas will include any carbonated beverages - colas, pops, sodas, soft drinks and diet drinks.

Over at No. Calories Needed, I’ve written about the health benefits associated with this change.

Over at No Credit Needed, I’ve written about the financial benefits associated with this change.

I am sure that there are thousands of people who never drink sodas, but I’m a soda addict.  For years, I drank regular soda, but about three years ago, I started drinking diet sodas - Diet Mountain Dew and Diet Coca Cola.

I will not be replacing the sodas with other drinks - juices or sports drinks.  Instead, I’ll just drink water.  So, technically, I’ll be making two changes.  First, I’ll no longer have soda and second, I’ll be drinking more water.  Win, win, baby!

  2. I’m not much of a soda drinker however I drink a LOT of coffee. I’ve been slowly cutting back on the coffee daily so I don’t get the dreaded “caffeine withdrawal” headaches.

Started with “no coffee after 3pm”, next day “no coffee after 2:30pm” and so on reducing my “alotted coffee time” by half hour a day. I’m still drinking it between 6-9am, and have been for several weeks but your post about soda reminds me that for both financial and health reasons I really need to finish the job and reduce it to zero coffee per day.

Good job with the no soda plan and good luck with the new blog. I’m looking forward to seeing what your 99 Changes are and hopefully being inspired to make some of my own :)

  3. Wow! Good luck with this.

A number of years ago, I cut my soda down to one per day. I’m pretty good at sticking with this (maybe once a week I’ll have two in one day). I tried cutting the soda out completely, but I like it so much! I found the moderation to be a happy medium :)

  4. Wow, I really really need to do this myself. I am a total DC addict. I will be reading to see how you do!
    Maybe I’ll even try it…?

  5. I had to give up caffeine back in my teens…more than 25 years ago, yikes! I couldn’t sleep at night. I did the same nothing after x-time and it worked great. I continued to drink gingerale or sprite for a while but these days I really don’t like the bubbles. If I want something sweet I might grab a hawiian punch or a vitamin water, but that happens once or twice a month. The rest of the time it is water for me Baby! I finally convinced my (ex)husband and son that it only made sense to order water in restaurants. The waiters REALLY don’t like it though!

  6. I did this after I read French women don’t get fat, and I’ve barely touched soda since. Here’s an odd trick- just start chugging water if you are having trouble drinking it. I don’t know why, but just forcing myself to drink it made it easier and easier. Good luck!
